Many people often associate having a facelift operation with garish, stretched and obvious results, however, this couldn’t be further from the truth thanks to modern sophisticated and subtle surgery methods. We can mould the perfect mixture of procedures to really rejuvenate your facial features, providing you with a younger and more vibrant appearance.

To achieve a natural result, we will use various techniques to restore your facial tissues to the position they were in when you were a young man. This treatment can remove wrinkles, fine lines and spare skin, as well as replace any lost volume.

How complicated is the procedure? What is involved?

Also called a rhytidectomy, the main areas treated during a face lift are the mid-face (between the lower eyelids and jawline) and the neck, although the eyelids and brow may be treated too. Often, the mid-face and neck will be tackled using a form of SMAS face lift, where the deeper tissues below the skin in the cheeks and lower face (and also occasionally the neck) are lifted and repositioned. This works to lift and increase the volume of the cheeks whilst producing a slimmer lower face with an improved jawline and better neck definition.

Your face lift may also include small amounts of liposuction to the lower face and neck as well as fat grafting for other areas of your face – this helps to achieve a comprehensive, cohesive rejuvenation of the whole face and neck.

What visible scarring will I have from this procedure?

The incisions and scars you have will depend on the extent of your procedure. For example, younger patients with good neck positioning will usually have a short scar facelift. This includes incisions that are at the front of the ear and the hairline above only. More mature patients, however, may have additional neck laxity, so may prefer to have a full face and neck lift. For this operation, the incisions are extended around the back of the ear and into the hairline behind, allowing the neck to be corrected too.

Either way, any scarring will be hidden behind your hairline and will fade over time.

What will my recovery be like?

Depending on individual patients, the procedure can take a number of hours to perform. The operation is usually done under general anaesthetic and you will be required to spend a night in hospital. The next morning, your dressings and small drains are removed and you will be discharged with just small steristrips around your ears. Be prepared for a small amount of swelling and bruising (this can last for around six weeks), however you can normally return to work and your typical social schedule within two to three weeks, depending on the extent of your surgery. Your stitches will be removed at around five to seven days post op. You may find your scars are a little red and raised at first, but this shouldn’t last too long. You may also experience some discomfort and tightness due to the expected swelling, but this can be easily managed with medication.

You’ll find that your procedure will look its best after around three months. Avoiding too much sun exposure and not smoking will also help increase the longevity of your facelift.

As a man, will having the facelift procedure affect my facial hair?

During the facelift procedure, the beard area of your skin will be moved slightly, so after your operation, you may find yourself needing to shave behind your ears as well as in front.  If you would rather not do this, then it may be worth investigating laser or electrolysis treatments to depilate the hair more permanently.

Am I ready for surgery?

Having a facelift is a big decision and there are a number of health considerations to discuss at your consultation before going ahead with the procedure. Firstly we will need to check that you are:

  • Medically well and fit
  • A non-smoker
  • Psychologically sound and stable
  • Have realistic expectations about the results
  • Have clear goals in mind regarding the outcome
  • Are prepared for some downtime and recovery after the operation

We always conduct a very detailed and in-depth consultation before your procedure as a facelift is such a personalised treatment – the results and operation can depend on the texture, quality, sun exposure, fat percentages and current elasticity of your skin. Talking through all of your options with your dedicated surgeon will ensure that you gain the results you desire from your facelift.
